ABOUT BULGARIA

Transport : motor, railway, air and water transport.
There are 5 airports and over 60 international airlines.

Landscape : extremely diverse. The lowlands occupy 31 %, the plains and the hilly terrains 41% and the mountains 28 % of the country’s territory. The highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula (Moussala 2 925 m) can be found in the Rila Mountains.

Water resources : on the East Bulgaria borders on the Black sea. There are also rivers, lakes, mineral springs. The largest rivers are: The Dunabe, Iskur, Maritza, Toundja, Ossum, Strouma, Yantra, Kamtchya.

Climate : moderate continental with four yearly seasons.

Natural life : basic characteristic features of Bulgaria’s natural life are the great variety and wealth of the animal and plant species. Protection of the natural world is one of the country’s major concerns.

Brief history:
The history of Bulgaria as a separate country  began in the 7th century with the arrival of the Bulgars and the foundation of the First Bulgarian Empire together with the local seven Slavic tribes, a union recognized by the Byzantium in 681.A country in the middle of the ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria has seen many twists in its history and has been a prospering empire stretching to a coastline on the Black, Aegean and Adriatic Seas and a cultural centre of Slavic Europe.
What follows are some of the most significant dates and events in the history of our country.

803 – 811 Bulgaria becomes one of three greatest countries in Europe
855 – Cyril and Methodius created the Slavonic script
864 – 866 –Bulgaria adopted Christianity
1018 – 1185 – Bulgaria fell within the limits of the Byzantine Empire and Rule
1185 – Restoration of the Bulgarian state
1396 – 1878 – Bulgaria was under the Turkish Yoke
1878 – 1944 – Bulgaria was a constitutional monarchy
1944 – 1989 - was known as the "People's Republic of Bulgaria" (PRB) and was ruled by the Bulgarian Communist Party.
